The Reverend Wakefield was Frank Randall's friend. They both shared a love of researching history and genealogy. We know that the Reverend's adopted son Roger (5 years old in 1945, so born in 1940?) was the son of the Reverend's niece (whose last name was Wakefield), who was killed in the Blitz when Roger as two. It happens that Frank probably had something to do with Roger's father's death about the same time. He was a pilot in the Royal Air Force who was reportedly shot down over the English Channel, but maybe not (read A Leaf in the Wind of All Hallows to get the full story). Frank knew Jeremiah MacKenzie in the war, was directing his missions. That's probably how he met Reverend Wakefield.
Reverend Wakefield was a pack rat, and never threw anything away, which was good for the story!
