Auld John was a rare man with a sword, and he advised Jamie's father to let Jamie learn to fight left-handed when Jamie was five years old (Virgins). John Murray first taught Jamie how to fight. And he instructed his son Ian that it was his duty to always stand at Jamie's right hand to protect his laird's weak side.Later Dougal added to his sword-fighting training.

Old John had also taught Jamie the gralloch prayer said over an animal that was killed (Voyager).
