Foster Child: FergusJamie is one of the most lovable characters in Outlander (really ALL storytelling). He married Claire to keep her out of danger, but they fell in love. Even though they are so different, they are perfectly matched. He thought Claire was a widow, because he knew she'd been married and was missing her husband. Later he learned the truth that her first husband Frank hadn't been born yet. The plot thickens...
Jamie is extremely strong and stubborn, as well as sweet, considerate, honorable, and passionate. He also isn't so rigid that he can't adapt, which is key. He is a very good husband to Claire although their life together is fraught with danger, intrigue, and conflict, even with Claire. When Claire finally gets the opportunity to choose whether to return to her time and Frank, or stay in the past with Jamie, it's a no brainer what her choice would be. Even without indoor plumbing, cars, and other modern conveniences, having Jamie for a husband seems worth the sacrifice.
Jamie has an EVIL arch-nemesis: Black Jack Randall who is a sadistic piece of shit, as Claire puts it. Black Jack wants to own Jamie's soul, and Jamie is just as adamant that he won't. Neither of them exactly gets what they want, but it is an important dynamic of the story. Jamie is a survivor though and his intense stubbornness, strong moral character, and intense love for Claire are key to his ability to live a good life in spite of all of the problems he has to deal with along the way.
