Brian and Ellen ran away together from The Gathering where Ellen's brother Colum wanted to announce her engagement to Malcolm Grant. They stayed hidden until Ellen was seven months pregnant, and then "Marrit for love" (Voyager, Chapter 5). His oldest son Willie died at age 11 of smallpox. His wife Ellen and her fourth child died in childbirth. Brian died of an apoplexy (stroke) while witnessing his son Jamie being brutally flogged by Jack Randall. Jamie fainted, and Brian thought he'd died.
