Jonathan Randall, Esquire was Captain of the Dragoons in the British Army. He was a sadist and like to hurt people! One of the unfortunate recipients of his attention was young Jamie Fraser who he tried his hideous best to break. Black Jack is a thoroughly despicable character, but his only redeeming characteristic is that he does what he says he'll do.

Jack Randall is a major character in the first two seasons/books. He was mentioned from time to time throughout the whole story.

Some of the more memorable things he did:

  • Attempted to rape Claire in the S01-E01 Episode Sassenach (Murtagh saves her)
  • Flogged Jamie the second time within a week (100 strokes each) when Jamie was only 19 (flash backs, the most explicit one being in S01-E06 Episode The Garrison Commander, where he recounts it in excruciating detail to Claire)
  • Interrogates Claire, tricks her into thinking he may be redeemable, then punches her hard in the stomach (Dougal threatens war and takes her away with instructions to deliver her back to Jack at Fort William for more questioning)
  • Interrogates Claire again after she tries to go through the stones again in S01-E08 Episode Both Sides Now. It leads to her almost being raped again by him.
  • Many horrific things in Season One episodes 15 Wentworth Prison and 16 To Ransom a Man's Soul .... but he gets his due in season 2 and Jamie gets a measure of revenge as well.
  • Marries Mary Hawkins in March 1746 in Season Two/Dragonfly in Autumn (can't see him at all as the husbandly type)
